SpinStudio VGA Adapter

The SpinStudio VGA adapter allows a standard VGA monitor to be plugged into the SpinStudio platform in a way that is compatible with Parallax's Demo or Proto boards, but unlike other development platforms, this can be unplugged when not needed, and another peripheral module can be inserted in it's place.

Socket "C" is the prefered position on the SpinStudio mainboard to maintain compatibility with existing Propeller code written for use with the Demo/Proto boards.

Assembly

Start by inserting the 5 - 240 ohm resistors (red marks in diagram above) into the circuit board. Turn the circuit board over and solder these 5 resistors in place. Trim the protruding resistor leads. The colored bands on a 240 ohm resistor are Red-Yellow-Brown.

Next insert the 3 - 470 ohm resistors (green marks in diagram above) into the circuit board. Turn the circuit board over and solder these 3 resistors in place. Trim the protruding resistor leads. The colored bands on a 470 ohm resistor are Yellow-Violet-Brown.

Now install the 20 pin SpinStudio connector, blue "B". Note - This component is inserted from the bottom of the board, and soldered on the top, opposite of the other components! You may want to solder 1 pin first, check to be sure the connector is positioned snuggly against the bottom of the circuit board before soldering the remaining 19 pins. Also you may want to turn the circuit board while soldering, to "attack" the pins in each row from a different angle. How you solder is up to you, but just be careful not to create any solder bridges, or dry solder joints, as they may be difficult to track down later.

The last component to be installed is the VGA connector, labeled by blue "A"s above. Simply snap the connector in place from the top of the board, flip the board over and solder the connector in place from the rear of the board. Apply some solder to the grounding tabs as well to help mechanically fasten the connectors to the board, as over this modules lifetime, the connector will be stressed many times by plugging and unplugging your monitor, it needs all the support it can get.

All finished!

Now test your newly assembled VGA module by running any of the many VGA demos available in Parallax's Object Exchange
